CAIR Gymnasium Renovation
Scope of Work:
Renovate gymnasium to improve safety and functionality.
Project Description:
CAIR provides a safe, structured, and supportive environment tailored to each K–12 student’s individual needs. In alignment with its alternative education philosophy—centered on discovery, resilience, and individualized success—this renovation uncovers the hidden architectural beauty of a 75-year-old gymnasium, transforming it into a vibrant, engaging space for learning and activity.
The primary goal was the removal of an outdated suspended acoustic ceiling, routinely compromised by students’ basketballs intentionally dislodging tiles and the occasional T-bar. Though no injuries occurred, the system had become a liability. Years earlier, a hidden gem had been discovered above: riveted bowstring trusses, southern yellow pine rafters, and tongue-and-groove decking. Rather than concealing them again, the design embraced exposure.
The ceiling was removed entirely. Trusses were structurally reinforced, and new mechanical systems were discreetly integrated. High-bay fixtures and LED strips were mounted along the upper chords of the trusses, casting focused light on the court while softly illuminating the natural wood above. Conduit was carefully routed to minimize visual distraction, highlighting the space’s newfound material richness and structural rhythm.
To address acoustic performance, custom absorption panels—finished in the district’s color palette—were strategically placed to reduce reverberation and complement new wall graphics and a new court surface. The result is a high-functioning, expressive space that honors the building’s original materiality while supporting CAIR’s mission: creating environments that reveal potential, foster resilience, and celebrate authenticity.
