Remodel an old warehouse space into a vibrant and eclectic restaurant space.

Project Description:

Nestled within the Crossroads Arts District, this project represents the first phase of a larger redevelopment encompassing five early twentieth-century industrial buildings. Once home to a local spring manufacturer, the long-vacant property had deteriorated over decades, serving only as a refuge for vagrants and pigeons. When first encountered, the interiors were stripped to the shell—revealing original brick and clay-block walls, exposed steel, and remnants of heavy industrial equipment.

Despite its worn condition, the structure possessed remarkable authenticity and a strong architectural identity. Recognizing this inherent character, the Owner, design-build contractor, and Alinea Architects formed a collaborative team to reimagine the complex. The design approach sought to honor the site’s industrial heritage while introducing modern functionality and a renewed sense of place.

The renovation celebrates the building’s historic fabric by preserving and exposing existing masonry, clay block, and plaster walls throughout the new interior spaces. Layered interventions—clean, contemporary insertions set against rugged industrial textures—create a dialogue between old and new.

The result is a thoughtful transformation that preserves a tangible connection to the past while positioning the building for contemporary use. The project stands as a testament to the enduring potential of Kansas City’s historic industrial architecture and the value of adaptive reuse in fostering vibrant urban renewal.....and those burgers!!!!
